Women have emerged as formidable leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators in the evolving global economy. However, in India, their journey towards financial autonomy is still laden with societal and systemic hurdles.
To delve deeper into the investing trends of India's affluent women, we surveyed 105 High-Net-Worth Indian (HNI) women, each commanding a net worth of INR 10 crores or more. Spanning ages 22 to 60, and hailing from diverse professional backgrounds, this survey aimed to uncover their investment behaviors, preferences, and service expectations. The insights revealed indicate the need for a paradigm shift in how wealth management services are designed and delivered to women investors in India.
Here are some key findings -
INTENT
a. Strong Desire and Interest in Diverse Investments
95% of respondents show interest in investing across various asset classes, with Listed Equities (61.9%) leading, followed by Gold (54.3%) and Real Estate (41%). Alternative Investments are as favoured as Fixed Income. (35%).
b. Broad Understanding with a Keen Desire to Learn More
41% of respondents categorise themselves as Level 1 investors. We defined Level 1 as
- having a broad understanding of investments,
- being in the process of establishing their long-term objectives and
- re-evaluating their existing wealth management partnerships.
INACTION
a. Predominantly Risk-averse
The average risk tolerance is rated at 5.1, with only 16% viewing themselves as strongly risk-taking.
b. Moderate Involvement in Financial Decision-making
Less than half (47%) of the respondents are strongly involved in their family’s financial decisions, with an average involvement rating of 6.2.
c. Suboptimal Satisfaction with Wealth Management Services
Satisfaction levels with existing wealth management partners are moderate, with an average rating of 5.9, and only 6.2% feel extremely satisfied.
INTEGRATION
a. Acknowledgement of the Need for Women-centric Wealth Advisory
More than 80% of the respondents strongly believe that there is a necessity for dedicated wealth management for women in the country.
